Book review

Greetings to all my fellow Jedi.  Happy Spring to those in the Northern Equator!  We have a lot to talk about so let us get to it.

The book is, for most purposes, complete.  I have not heard from any traditional publisher as of yet but, with one more submission to be sent out shortly, we are not down to our only hope yet.  So, armed with that knowledge, I have decided to commit to the Kindle platform for publishing so I will have to go through and see if I am satisfied with any images I might put into the book and go through some final formatting and editing.  With the work that needs to be done I see no more of a fitting day to release the e-book about training to become a Modern Jedi than International Star Wars Day.

So, I don’t expect that to break the holonet but that is the breaking news.  The book will be released on May the Fourth of this year.

In other news, I finished reading The Force Awakens in book format a few weeks ago, in addition to seeing the movie a few more times.  The book reviews were fairly brutal, even among those who would call themselves Star Wars fans.  I enjoyed the book, giving it two thumbs up even though it really didn’t provide any vital information that wasn’t put into the movie.  The only qualm I could have against the book would be the vocabulary used by Alan Dean Foster.  Some of the words were novel, new, and fancy but soon became repetitive by the end of the book.  Alan would have done well to heed the words of one of my English teachers who jokingly said, “Never use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.”  However, I added some words to my lexicon in the process so I am not complaining.

Lastly, I finally have gotten around to creating that YouTube channel I had always been thinking of.  I have started some playlists of official Star Wars releases along with some other relevant videos and have created my own introduction video.  There will be more content released once the book project is in the rear-view mirror.  Go on over, take a look, and please subscribe so you will be notified of all new content.

Look forward to one more update before May the Fourth.  Until then, the Force will be with you.  Always.

Book Update for January 2016

by Jetsi

maxresdefaultHappy New Year to all my fellow Jedi!

This project, the one I have been undertaking for many years, is almost ready to come to an end.  The book is almost complete.

Even though the book is almost ready, I am thinking of delaying self-publishing until late March or April. A few weeks ago I decided to recheck a traditional publishing house’s website on their submission guidelines and discovered that they have recently added many different genres to their list of acceptable submissions.  With that information I feel very excited in that they may be the perfect publisher for my book.  They say that I can self-publish and that they will still accept my submission but I wouldn’t want to have two different products out as I am certain a professional editor would recommend some changes to the book, most likely simple grammar changes and the like but they may have some suggestions on flow or other large changes. I am putting the finishing touches on my submission application and will have that delivered within the week.  I hope my decision to delay publishing a few months doesn’t disappoint too many people.

I wish I could take credit for this, I don’t know who made it.

Did you know there is another Star Wars movie out there that needs to be seen?  With four viewings in and in all formats available, I am thinking I have at least one more IMAX viewing in my future before The Force Awakens is released to Blu-Rey.  Again, if you haven’t seen it in IMAX 3D you are really missing out on a great experience.

Hello to all my fellow Jedi!

SW-THE-FORCE-AWAKENS

Have you seen The Force Awakens yet?  Through a curious chain of events I was able to attend a showing of the movie in 3D on opening day, albeit it was the 2 AM showing.  Having had a few Earth rotations to think back on the movie, I can’t help but be very excited for what the future holds for the franchise.  I will remain spoiler free for a while before going in depth about the movie so you have no worries there if you haven’t seen it already.

Regarding the book, I had wanted it released before The Force Awakens had been released.  Unfortunately my wife had to be rushed into an emergency surgery a few weeks ago and there have been complications since the surgery.  This had taken away any time for writing in the last two weeks, and with the holidays fast approaching and the Younglings home on Winter Break I do not anticipate any writing to occur before the end of the year.  So my soft publishing date is now in the middle of January, barring any further hurdles resulting from my wife’s health.

The optimist in me who sees the silver lining is now happy that I can include information from The Force Awakens into the book and I don’t have to do a major rewrite because of some bizarre plot twist or newly revealed information or insight about the Force and the Jedi.

I look forward to my next post here, as I anticipate it telling all of you that my project, the one I have been working on for the last six years, is finally coming to fruition.  Go out, see the new movie, and may the Force be with you!

two-suns-tatooine-star-warsWishing all of the Jedi a happy Equinox today!

The book progress is continuing nicely.  I had some insights that are causing me to move some chapters around and move information from multiple chapters into a new one.  This has reduced the amount of new content that I have written but in the end it will be a first class product.  I am getting excited as we are approaching the final push to eBook publication and continuing to solicit traditional publishing sources for a printed product.

Earlier in September I received a free month of guided meditations from Headspace as a reward for consecutive days of meditation.  As part of my work on the book I have been using many different services and products to determine if I could recommend them in good conscience in the book.  I decided to give it away on Facebook in a random drawing contest.  I also posted notifications of the contest on our Twitter and Instagram feeds.
Headspace-Logo  I don’t know any details about the Twitter or Instagram success but I can imagine that few saw the information.  I do know that only eighteen people saw the Facebook post and that, out of those people, only one person commented on why they should win.  Needless to say, it wasn’t really a random winner.

11998985_10153174743755003_5170829773761076510_nWhy do I mention all of this?  Because Headspace just gave me another free month of guided meditations.  I will be posting another contest on the Facebook page tomorrow.  If you haven’t liked our Facebook page yet, get on over and do that now.  Don’t forget about our Twitter and Instagram accounts as well.  If whether you have already liked our Facebook page or are a new participant, be certain to Follow and click on the See First option to see all of our posts on Facebook at the top of your page.

Thanks for reading, good luck on the next contest, and I will be in touch with more updates next month.  May the Force be with you!

Memorial Day

by Jetsi

Yesterday was Memorial Day in the United States, a day where we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.  These fallen soldiers were Jedi, whether they used, believed, or maybe were even unaware of what a Jedi was.  The majority of these who died for their country did so for just causes while some died in wars that did not need to be fought, but that is not the focus of this post.

The focus has to deal with flags and their effect on us as a species.  In a quote often attributed to Patton but actually from the movie of the same name, the character Patton said, “I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his country.”  In this case flag and country are synonymous.  Why are we so willing to fight and kill over what makes us different?  Flags, lines on a map, religion,  political affiliation, and skin color are just a few examples of ridiculous things to fight and go to war over.  Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot does a good job of putting this into perspective.

So what is the solution?  One I believe in would be a flag for the planet Earth and the human race as a whole, one that would unite our species and help us realize we are all in this together.  There has been a recent proposal for this, as well as numerous real and fictional variants throughout history as well.

Would this work?  I don’t know but I would be willing to give it a try as a short term initial trial run.  But I feel that this would always act as a dividing line.  The minute we encounter an alien race our flag would indicate that they are not part of our group.  Where do you draw the line?  Our galaxy, galactic cluster, the entire universe, or maybe even different dimensions?  I hope you can see the folly in this.

There is no real direction to this thought train, it is simply a rambling investigation of our attachment to our identity.  This will be discussed further in the book when I discuss the Republic, my term for our collective in the universe.  What are your thoughts on this?  Am I a traitor to my country or a patriot for my species?  Or something in between?  Let me know in the comments.  And if this made you think a little please be sure to like and share it.

solo-quoteIt has been quite a month since the last update.  As far as the book goes, I made great progress on the book for the two weeks following the last update.  However, up until yesterday I was at a difficult crossroads with the book that was resulting in an epic case of writer’s block.  It wasn’t so much that I didn’t know what to write but that I didn’tcelebration-keyart-wide-132889 know how to proceed.  I knew I needed more information to be presented but I couldn’t figure out how to get it to segue from one section to the next.  But, while trailing the wife while pushing the cart in the grocery store and practicing some mindful walking, the Force provided me the insight I needed in regards with how to continue and finish the chapter.  Maybe the writer’s block wasn’t such a bad thing as it gave me some time to watch all of the information coming from Star Wars Celebration Anaheim!

What a weekend SWCA was.  In an unprecedented technological display, 30 hours of SWCA were streamed across the holonet for the enjoyment of those of us who couldn’t attend.  What information did we get?  What did we see?  The new trailer for The Force Awakens was debuted and I must admit that I still get chills when watching it.  There were some bootleg video versions for the new stand-alone film Rogue One, now known as Star Wars fett-600x245Anthologies, to be found on the holonet if one looked hard enough, and that film also looks to be extremely exciting as well, even if one reaches the conclusion that there will be no Jedi in it.  We were introduced to the new characters, and through the trailers and the images the story is starting to slowly flesh itself out while still leaving enough unknown to help build the excitement.  Star Wars Battlefront also released new in-game footage which also looks very exciting, and with it being the new canon one can also determine that Boba Fett escaped the Sarlacc.  So much more information came from SWCA than one little paragraph here can cover.  With SWC8 announced for London next year, I am already looking into getting my vacation time in the middle of July to see if I can attend.vaderburnthelmet

That is it for now.  With less than 2 weeks to Star Wars Day I believe that the lack of writing for the last few weeks will prohibit me from meeting my self-imposed deadline.  So, instead of getting false hopes raised, just know that I am writing as quickly as I can to provide a great manual while still raising a family and holding a full-time job.  I can tell you that it will be complete before The Force Awakens is released, that I do know for sure.

May the Force be with you!

Greetings Jedi,

I hope the new year is treating you all very well..

I apologize for the lack of last months update in a timely fashion.  The holidays, a funeral, and a wrist injury that hampers typing were all contributing factors.

The book continues to grow and evolve.  But I am doing my best to ensure the product is done well.  Have you watched Star Wars Rebels lately?  When Kanan and Ezra are in the Jedi Temple on Lothal Ezra asks, “You’re putting your life in my hands?”  To which Kanan replies, “You put your training in mine.”

I find this line and sentiment to be highly appropriate.  I am not taking the fact that people are using information from this website and in the future from a book lightly.  To be honest the thought is quite sobering. I am doing my best to ensure that I do not lead you astray or let you down.

In other news I am looking into adding a few new web URLs, something that is easier to remember and definitely shorter than this website’s address.  Something that can go across the back of a t-shirt with a new logo, perhaps?  You will just have to stay tuned.

Until next month, keep watching Rebels and keep up with your training.

Book Update for July 2014

by Jetsi

forceforchangelightsaberMy oh my!  The summer sure does bring about some busy times if you have Younglings in the house.  Even with the little ones and work I have been able to make some edits to the book.  These edits are thanks to the change by Disney/Lucasfilm to rename the Expanded Universe as Star Wars Legends and to remove its status as canon.

The change in status left me in a quandary for some time as I tired to figure out how to incorporate  these changes into the book and whether the loss of canon status was going to require me to rewrite significant portions of the book.  However, after some contemplation I realized that it truly didn’t matter and may even work to my benefit.  Throughout the book I am referencing Joseph Campbell quite extensively.  I don’t want to give too much away but I will say that the change from the EU to Legends happens tie in nicely with the underlying training theme of the book.

Another nice tie in with the book is the Star Wars Force For Change program.  This program allows fans of Star Wars to give back to the Republic while garnering opportunities for some pretty intense prizes to be given away raffle style.  As of this writing there are less than 2 days left to participate in the program.  If you wish to participate you can click here to make a contribution.  It will go to UNICEF, a very worthwhile cause.  You can forget about being in the movie, however, I am winning that one particular prize!

With the Younglings returning to the Academy in less than a month and changes to my work schedule and domicile I will be returning to writing more in the near future.  I understand that sounds like a broken record to those who have been following this for a while but I thank you for your patience and promise you a book that you will find enlightening and enjoyable to read.

May the Force be with you!

One of our readers had posted a link to a Jedi training manual on our Facebook page a while back and I finally got around to reading it in its completion.  The Book of Jedi by Dogen Elohim Altieri is available as a free download, you can get it by clicking here.

So, what are my thoughts?  When I first started reading The Book of Jedi I was uninspired.  The content was just short little quips and quotes and I didn’t feel like I was learning anything from it that I didn’t already know .  At 78 pages in length I was worried that I would quickly finish the book and emerge none the wiser.

However, somewhere about half-way through the book the content definitely changed.  The PDF book actually started providing instruction, giving direction on real ways to harness the power of the Force instead of giving short, cryptic movie quotes.  The lessons are insightful and will definitely help you in your journey while the appendix takes up too much of the book to be an appendix, instead it should be its own chapter.

My final thoughts?  The book is available as a free download so you are only out an hour of your time to read it.  Even if it was horrible your investment wouldn’t be too large.  But I think you will get something out of reading the book.  The book offers unique insights into Jedi training and I believe you will emerge from your reading a better Jedi.  Go to the website and give it a download.

Have you already read The Book of Jedi?  What did you think?

I haven’t been posting lately because I have been having trouble getting my Facebook app, the Holocron Transfer Tool, to work properly and I like having a way to get a post written on Monday to automatically post on Friday and share across the Modern Jedi Knight social media pages on Facebook and Twitter.  Be sure to join them to receive notification that a post has been written or you can also join our email list at the bottom of the page to receive notifications via email.  Don’t worry, I don’t even have access to the list so it can’t be sold or distributed, it is all done through Google and they won’t do that to the list either.

So I made a little side trip to Coruscant and, in the shadow of the Jedi Temple, I found this Chadra-Fan with a prototype protocol droid named 1N-4M that looked to be the salvation to my Holocron Transfer Tool with a faulty motivator.  This is serving as a test message to calibrate 1N-4M’s settings and also serve as notification that I haven’t fallen victim to any nefarious bounty hunters in the region.

If you find the photo of 1N-4M interesting you can watch a short video clip that is showing the current potential of motion-capture technology in regards to gaming.  The results are eerily amazing and also could provide quite the conundrum for the Jedi of the future.  Watch it and let me know what you think.

Did you figure out the droids pronounced name yet?  As a small hint, don’t think of the first character as a number but as a letter.  Pretty clever, huh?
